Altruism and Evolution

Upon popular request I start now to discuss some issues which came up in the talks with the Dalai Lama. One point was the origin of altruism. If an essential characteristic of altruism is that by helping others you endanger yourself and possibly even your family then it seems a challenge to explain altruism through the theory of evolution.

I look forward to your comments

@ One point was the origin of altruism.

@Zeilinger "to explain altruism through the theory of evolution."

Which kind of theory of evolution? Buddhism itself stands within the tension of tradtion and evolution to the future ( e.g. after Buddha Siddhartha Gautama there will come Buddha Maitreya [Buddha of Love of Synthesis] bringing an evolutionary new step).

On this topic, may I reccomend: The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins.

i do think that the need for altruism can be explained through evolution theory. i remember some time ago there was an article in spectrum/sciam on that topic...
certain animals also behave in a very unselfish way when for example the whole tribe is in danger (they even sacrifice themselves for ther groups).
since primates (and so humans) are herd-animals this would indeed explain that kind of behaviour. just since the evolutionary pressure on the humans is gone, they develop into a more selfish direction, as it seems (in general)
